Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as a little girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay quickly fell in love with an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to make use of the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get interested in production for the broadcast media. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of one of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college.
